How to Choose the Best Installed Electric Oven

How can you choose the best installed electric oven in 2026? Get the best advice and shopping tips for choosing the right electric built-in oven for your needs.

The best electric built-in ovenBelow you will find a shopping guide helping you get the most of your electric installed oven.

The classic gas-fired ovens of the old stoves have long since started to lose ground in front of electric furnaces, and will probably continue to do so more and more.

It’s hard to imagine yourself in the ultramodern and technological world where we live without an electric oven. An electric oven, whether it be installed or not, integrates perfectly in a modern kitchen as we all want.

Electric ovens reduce cooking times and offer far more functions than traditional gas ovens. When choosing between an electric oven and a classic gas oven, the decision is not hard.

What do we do when it comes to the type or model of the electric built-in oven to buy?

How Do You Choose the Best Installed Electric Oven?

When buying an electric oven we have to take into account several criteria such as whether it is installed or freestanding, the design, the dimensions, the material from which the oven is made, the energy efficiency category and the most important criterion, the endowment and the functions. We take them systematically.

Type of Oven

Electric ovens can be installed or not. Freestanding in general are much smaller, resembling microwave ovens. Even if they are much smaller, there are quite good independent electric ovens. If the oven is only used a few times a year, and then the cooked food is small, then an independent electric oven may prove to be ideal.

The independent oven allows more freedom and is easier to install. Instead, for those who cook much and often, a installed oven can prove more appropriate and efficient.

Size and Capacity of the Oven

The size and capacity of your oven are indeed among the most important aspects to consider when making your selection. They will determine not only the physical fit of the oven into your kitchen space, but also the volume of food you can cook at once.

External Size

Starting with the external dimensions, these need to match the space you have available in your kitchen. There are generally two standard widths for built-in electric ovens: 60cm and 90cm. The narrower option is the most common in British kitchens, fitting neatly within the typical 60cm-wide oven housing unit. It’s a good idea to measure your available space before you start shopping to ensure the oven you choose will fit.

The 90cm wide oven option tends to offer more capacity and possibly additional features, but it would require a larger kitchen or a dedicated large housing unit. There are also double ovens that might fit into a tall housing unit. These have two separate oven compartments, providing flexibility to cook different dishes at different temperatures simultaneously.

Internal Capacity

Once you’ve established what external size will fit in your kitchen, you’ll want to consider the oven’s internal capacity. This is typically measured in litres. A larger capacity allows you to cook more food at once, which can be very beneficial if you regularly cook for a large family or entertain frequently. Conversely, if you’re in a smaller household, you might find a larger oven takes longer to heat up and uses more energy than a smaller model, so it might not be the most efficient choice.

Standard single ovens usually offer an internal capacity ranging from about 50 litres to 70 litres. Compact ovens can offer less, while large single ovens, double ovens, or 90cm wide models can provide significantly more.

To help visualise the capacity, think about the size and number of the dishes you’ll want to put in the oven at once. If you like to cook large roasts or multiple trays of biscuits, for example, you’ll want to ensure that the oven capacity can accommodate this. Some ovens offer more usable space than others of the same capacity because of the placement of shelves and the design of the oven walls.

Another key factor related to capacity is the flexibility of the shelving within the oven. Look for models that have removable and adjustable shelves, allowing you to alter the internal layout to suit different dishes.

Choosing the right size and capacity for your oven is a delicate balance. It’s about finding the sweet spot that fits your kitchen, suits your cooking style, and meets the needs of your household, while also being energy efficient.

Design

In today’s world, where kitchens often serve as the central hub of a home, aesthetics plays a significant role in choosing the right appliances. Gone are the days when an oven was merely a functional tool; it’s now seen as a key design element that can add character and style to your kitchen.

The overall aesthetic of an installed electric oven is typically determined by three factors: the design style, the colour, and the finish.

Design Style

Design style is the first noticeable aspect of an oven’s aesthetic. Some ovens have a traditional design, with large knobs and a prominent door handle, which may be suitable for a classic or country-style kitchen. Others have a sleek, modern design with touch controls and minimal buttons that could be more at home in a contemporary kitchen.

The design also includes the type of door the oven has. Some doors are drop-down, which can provide a handy shelf for resting dishes on, whereas others are side-opening, which may be easier to access in a tight space. Some high-end models even feature innovative designs like slide-away doors that disappear underneath the oven, providing unobstructed access to the interior.

Colour

The colour of your oven will also significantly influence its aesthetic appeal. The classic choice for many is stainless steel, with its timeless look and easy match to other appliances. But don’t limit yourself if you have a specific design aesthetic in mind.

Black ovens can make a dramatic statement and are a popular choice for modern kitchens with dark colour schemes. White ovens, on the other hand, blend seamlessly into lighter kitchens and can contribute to a clean, bright look. Some manufacturers also offer more adventurous colours like red or blue, which can make the oven a standout feature in your kitchen.

Finish

The finish of an oven refers to the texture and appearance of its surface. Stainless steel can be brushed or polished. Brushed stainless steel has a muted, matte look and is good at hiding smudges and fingerprints. Polished stainless steel has a shiny, reflective surface that can look very striking but might show up marks more easily.

Glass finishes are another popular choice, especially for contemporary kitchens. They offer a sleek, high-shine look and are usually easy to clean, but, like polished stainless steel, they can be prone to showing fingerprints.

Material

Besides the importance in design, the ovens are also very important in the life of the appliance. Stainless steel and glass are the best materials. You can also choose anti-slip stainless steel, so cleaning will be easier.

The best material for the oven door is ceramic glass that is good to be double. The inside of the oven is often made of glossy enamel, which would be ideal to be heat treated.

Energy efficiency

Energy class A is the most common class of energy consumption among ovens, but rarely you can also find ovens that are not part of this class.

For those who want a lower operating cost, it is recommended that they accurately check the kilowatt hour consumption of an oven before purchasing and take into account when choosing.

Even if they are part of the same consumption class, not all ovens have identical consumption.

Functionality

Finally, to the functionality criterion, it is advisable to analyse as many models as possible. This will give you an idea of the functions on the market models and the functions that satisfy your needs. Lately, the market segment of electric ovens has been invaded by many brands (not necessarily with tradition in home appliances). Many of these brands can even offer dozens of functions.

A very useful but controversial function at the same time is self-cleaning. Self-cleaning function is found on most of the installed electric ovens. I’ve heard cases where customers complain about burning their oven when they tried to use self-cleaning. However, there are isolated cases with problems that can be avoided by carefully reading the warranty terms and conditions of the product prior to purchase.

The catalytic self-cleaning function is the most common because it is present in furnaces for normal and non-industrial use. Self-cleaning consists essentially of a ceramic layer inside the oven that absorbs grease and dirt to burn it at very high temperatures during the operation of the appliance.

Another important function to look for in an installed electric oven is that of double heating: upper and lower. The double heating function helps to bake faster and relieves you of the effort to turn the tray, cooking the baked foods evenly. You can also cook more dishes at the same time without problems.

Other functions required from my point of view that should not be missing from an electric oven (and not too lacking) are the grill and rotisserie functions. The grill can be tiltable or adjustable.

The defrost function is mandatory and the option for various doughs such as pizza is also very useful and it is recommended to be in the menu of the chosen oven.

The ventilation function makes the indoor temperature uniform, so the products will come out perfectly, looking to buy an oven that has such a function.

Depending on the allocated budget, the information presented here through your own filter passes the correct decision that matches your needs and your family.

Type of Controls

Installed electric ovens can have dial controls, touch controls, or a combination of both. Dial controls are usually straightforward to use but may not offer the precision of touch controls.

Touch controls provide a sleek look and precise control over the temperature and cooking time. However, they may require a learning curve for some users.

Safety Features

Safety should never be compromised when it comes to any home appliance. Look for installed electric ovens with safety features such as child locks, automatic switch-off, and cool touch doors.

The child lock feature ensures that the oven settings can’t be tampered with when activated, a godsend for households with curious children.

An automatic switch-off feature is handy as it turns off the oven after a set period, preventing potential accidents from happening.

The cool-touch door feature makes sure the exterior of the oven remains cool even while cooking, reducing the risk of burns.
